”GOLDEN DAYS” – A CONTEMPORARY DESCRIPTION FROM THE LEMMENJOKI GOLD FIELDS

How is gold prospector’s life in wilderness at the mercy of nature and seasons? What kind of adaptation does it take to spend daily life with your family far from everything? How strong is the bond of the unique community and the power of family?

Seppo Kummala and Ilkka Ärrälä published a book ” Golden Days – a contemporary description from the Lemmenjoki gold fields” in December 2011. It is an unforgettable description about the daily life of present-day gold prospecting in Lemmenjoki area, northern Lapland. The interesting book is crowned with fantastic photography.

Originally, photographer Ilkka Ärrälä took about 15 000 photos so only part of them are in the book. Part of the published and unpublished photos will be in exhibition in Gold Prospector Museum during the summer season 2012. The museum is privileged to have Mr. Ärrälä’s “Golden Days” – photographic exhibition as the first place after publication of the book.

Photos vary from spectacular sceneries till small details of daily life being both as gorgeous and telling about the life and working environment of this special community. In roadless wilderness you don’t complain easily and honest working, nature, community and family are highly appreciated. In addition to machinery modern time brought also families to the gold fields. Women and children are essential part of the gold prospecting community.

The writer Seppo Kummala says in his forewords as follows: “Ilkka’s great photos bring reader both to daily life and celebration of the fjelds. Nearer that life you can get only by travelling to Lemmenjoki. That actually is a very good idea.
