The world’s only international Gold Museum
Tankavaara is home for the only international museum in the world displaying past and present of gold panning and prospecting. Gold Museum was founded in 1973 by gold prospector’s to research and preserve the history of gold prospecting and gold panning in Finnish Lapland from the 19th century to the present day. Today, Gold Museum is run by the private Gold Museum Foundation.
The main exhibition, The History of Gold in Lapland, introduces you to 150 years of gold prospecting in Lapland, starting with the Ivalojoki gold rush in 1869. The international exhibition Golden World takes you on a journey around the world to discover the gold traditions of more than 20 countries, from ancient Rome to the Klondike.
Gold panning all year round
At Gold Museum, you can try your hand at gold panning in guided workshops. Gold panning includes a museum ticket and a short guided tour in The History of Gold in Lapland exhibition. More information and tickets here.
Gold Museum is open all year round:
October-May: Mon-Fri 11-16 (11 a.m.-4 p.m.)
June-September: Mon-Sun 10-17 (10 a.m.-5 p.m.)

Summer program extended to October
Due to high demand, the Gold Museum is offering its gold panning workshop until October 16th every weekday at 1 pm. The Gold Miner’s Starter Pack includes a guided museum tour, an entrance ticket and a gold panning tutorial. Kultamuseossa kummittelee! // Ghosts at the Gold Museum!
Kultamuseo järjestää 30.10. tapahtuman, joka juhlistaa pyhäinpäivää, kekriä ja halloweenia. Erityinen museokierros johdattelee kummitustarinoihin Lapin ja maailman kultakentiltä. Lapsille luvassa kurpitsa- ja kultajahtia Kultamuseon näyttelyiden uumenissa. Pop-up kahvila tarjoilee munkkeja, lämmintä juotavaa ja teemaan sopivia herkkuja klo 14:30 alkaen.
Museoon pääsee 30.10. ilmaiseksi klo 16 jälkeen. Tervetuloa!
Gold Museum hosts an event celebrating All Saints day, halloween and the Finnish Kekri on 30.10. Special tour presents the best ghost stories from Lapland's and world's gold fields. For children, there is an pumpkins and gold-treasure hunt. A pop-up cafe offers doughnuts, hot drinks and seasonal treats from 14:30 onwards.
Free admission to the museum after 16:00. Welcome!

Tästä päivästä 1.10. Kultamuseolla taas käytössä talven aukioloajat. Olemme auki läpi talven maanantaista perjantaihin, 11–16.
Yleiset kullanhuuhdontakierrokset jatkuvat arkisin klo 13 aina 16.10. asti, sen jälkeen keskiviikkoisin ja perjantaisin, aloitus klo 13:30. Yksityiset museo- ja huuhdontakierrokset myös muina aikoina varauksella. Ota yhteyttä!

Hyvää Evertin päivää! // Happy Evert's day!
Tänään on Evertin nimipäivä. Lapin kultahistoriassa kyseisellä nimellä on erityinen merkitys, sillä suurin koskaan Lapista löytynyt hippu sai nimen löytäjänsä Evert Kiviniemen mukaan. 392,9 gramman painoinen hippu löytyi vuonna 1935.
Today is the name day of Evert. In Lapland's gold history, this name has a special meaning. The biggest nugget found in Lapland got its name from its finder, Evert Kiviniemi. The 392,9 gram nugget was found in 1935.

Kesäkauden suurin hippu! / Biggest gold find of the season!
Kultamuseon kierrokselle osallistuneiden matkailijoiden loma sai iloisen alun, kun he löysivät huuhtoessa kesäkauden suurimman hipun! Huuhdontakierrokset arkipäivisin klo 13 aina 16.10. asti, joten vielä monia mahdollisuuksia koittaa onneaan.
*Emme voi taata että ihan näin isoja hippuja löytyy, mutta etsintähän on se suola, eikö? 😎
Tourists taking part in Gold Museum's gold panning tour got a pleasant start to their trip, as they found the biggest gold flake of the summer season. Panning tours run Monday to Friday at 1pm until 16.10., plenty of time to try your luck.
