The world’s only international Gold Museum
Tankavaara is home for the only international museum in the world displaying past and present of gold panning and prospecting. Gold Museum was founded in 1973 by gold prospector’s to research and preserve the history of gold prospecting and gold panning in Finnish Lapland from the 19th century to the present day. Today, Gold Museum is run by the private Gold Museum Foundation.
The main exhibition, The History of Gold in Lapland, introduces you to 150 years of gold prospecting in Lapland, starting with the Ivalojoki gold rush in 1869. The international exhibition Golden World takes you on a journey around the world to discover the gold traditions of more than 20 countries, from ancient Rome to the Klondike.
Gold panning all year round
At Gold Museum, you can try your hand at gold panning in guided workshops. Gold panning includes a museum ticket and a short guided tour in The History of Gold in Lapland exhibition. More information and tickets here.
Gold Museum is open all year round:
October-May: Mon-Fri 11-16 (11 a.m.-4 p.m.)
June-September: Mon-Sun 10-17 (10 a.m.-5 p.m.)

Object of August: berry picker
Lapin kultamaillakin seurattiin marjojen kypsymistä ja niitä poimittiin, kun kullankaivulta ehdittiin. Etenkin menneinä vuosikymmeninä ne olivat tärkeä lisä ruokavalioon. Kuten työvälineiden suhteen, olivat marjastajan apuvälineet monesti omatekoisia, tuunattuja. Siitä yhtenä esimerkkinä tämä Jäkälä-äytsillä, Korhosten kämpällä, käytössä ollut poimuri.
In the gold fields of Lapland, it was usual to follow the ripening of various berries, and prospectors picked them whenever they had time-off from prospecting. This was and is possible due to right to roam law in Finland. During past decades berries were even more important addition to daily nutrition. As the prospecting tools were often tuned, so were the tools for berry picking. One example is this berry picker used in Lemmenjoki, in Jäkälä-äytsi and prospectors of Korhonen’s cabin.

New changing exhibition starting tomorrow Monday 3th of August for public. The exhibition is based on photographer Jukka Gröndahl's photos he has taken since mid-1980s in Lemmenjoki and it is called "Lemmenjoen konekaivun lopunajan valokuvanäyttely". The exhibition is included in entrance fee. Welcome!
