The world’s only international Gold Museum
Tankavaara is home for the only international museum in the world displaying past and present of gold panning and prospecting. Gold Museum was founded in 1973 by gold prospector’s to research and preserve the history of gold prospecting and gold panning in Finnish Lapland from the 19th century to the present day. Today, Gold Museum is run by the private Gold Museum Foundation.
The main exhibition, The History of Gold in Lapland, introduces you to 150 years of gold prospecting in Lapland, starting with the Ivalojoki gold rush in 1869. The international exhibition Golden World takes you on a journey around the world to discover the gold traditions of more than 20 countries, from ancient Rome to the Klondike.
Gold panning all year round
At Gold Museum, you can try your hand at gold panning in guided workshops. Gold panning includes a museum ticket and a short guided tour in The History of Gold in Lapland exhibition. More information and tickets here.

October-May: Mon-Fri 11-16 (11 a.m.-4 p.m.)
June-September: Mon-Sun 10-17 (10 a.m.-5 p.m.)

Kultamuseon kierrokselle osallistuneiden matkailijoiden loma sai iloisen alun, kun he löysivät huuhtoessa kesäkauden suurimman hipun! Huuhdontakierrokset arkipäivisin klo 13 aina 16.10. asti, joten vielä monia mahdollisuuksia koittaa onneaan.

Tourists taking part in Gold Museum's gold panning tour got a pleasant start to their trip, as they found the biggest gold flake of the summer season. Panning tours run Monday to Friday at 1pm until 16.10., plenty of time to try your luck.

Kultahistorian kuvissa monilla miehistä on muhkea parta tai viikset. Kullankaivajat pitivät ja pitävät yleensä hyvää huolta naamakasvustostaan. Näin teki aikoinaan myös Niilo ”Nipa” Raumala. Oheisesta ilmeisesti hänelle kuuluneesta parranajovälinelaatikosta löytyy erilaisia tykötarpeita.
In the pictures of Lapland gold history, you can often see men with voluminous beard or moustache. However, gold prospectors took and take care of their facial hair. So did one legendary prospector Niilo “Nipa” Raumala whose shave kit included necessary equipment.

Suuren kysynnän vuoksi Kultamuseon kullanhuuhdonta jatkuu 16.10. saakka joka arkipäivä klo 13. Kullankaivajan aloituspakkaukseen kuuluu opastettu museokierros, museon pääsylippu sekä kullanhuuhdonta. Koko ohjelma toteutetaan sisätiloissa, joten syyskelit eivät haittaa menoa. Museonäyttelyihin osaavan oppaan johdolla syventyminen avaa kullanhuuhdontaa ja Lapin historiaa aivan uudella tavalla. FI/ENG Kultakentillä on historiassa käytetty vaikka minkälaisia esineitä vaskooleina, tynnyrinpohjista lautasiin. Kultamuseon huuhdontatyöpajassa opit erilaisista välineistä ja saat kokeilla huuhdontaa ihan oikealla vaskoolilla, todennäköisesti paremmin tuloksin kuin me videolla. Kullankaivajan aloituspakkaus arkisin klo 13, aina 16.10. asti.
Across history the most imaginative objects have been used for gold panning, from barrel bottoms to plates. At our gold washing tour, you'll learn about different tools and get to use a proper gold pan. You'll probably find more gold than we did in the video. Muistaako joku vielä Johanna-kahvin?
Kultamuseon näyttelyiden siimeksestä löytyy muun muassa tällainen kahvipaketti, kullankaivajan mökin hyllyltä. Johanna-kahvi tuli markkinoille vuonna 1950, kun kahvi oli vielä "kortilla". Johannaa mainostettiin ahkerasti SOK:in toimesta, esimerkiksi Kulta Katriinan rinnalla. Lapin kultakentillekin sitä varmasti päätyi, ahkerien kahvinjuojien herkuksi.
Nyt kun kahvi on likipitäen kultaakin arvokkaampaa, ehkäpä Kultamuseon pitäisi lanseerata oma kahvi. Laitetaanko nimeksi Johanna, vai kenties Petronella 🤔
