The world’s only international Gold Museum
Tankavaara is home for the only international museum in the world displaying past and present of gold panning and prospecting. Gold Museum was founded in 1973 by gold prospector’s to research and preserve the history of gold prospecting and gold panning in Finnish Lapland from the 19th century to the present day. Today, Gold Museum is run by the private Gold Museum Foundation.
The main exhibition, The History of Gold in Lapland, introduces you to 150 years of gold prospecting in Lapland, starting with the Ivalojoki gold rush in 1869. The international exhibition Golden World takes you on a journey around the world to discover the gold traditions of more than 20 countries, from ancient Rome to the Klondike.
Gold panning all year round
At Gold Museum, you can try your hand at gold panning in guided workshops. Gold panning includes a museum ticket and a short guided tour in The History of Gold in Lapland exhibition. In winter 2025-2026, gold panning will take place on Wednesdays and Fridays at 2:00 p.m.
Gold Museum is open all year round:
October-May: Mon-Fri 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
June-September: Mon-Sun 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

A group of elves has arrived to the Gold Museum 🤶🎅
Come and meet these and other happy elf friends on the Gold Museum's elf trail, which opens on December 1st!
During the Christmas season, elves of all sizes can fill out the Gold Museum's elf bingo while visiting the museum, searching for Santa's little helpers hidden in the museum. Will you find all the elves hiding in the museum and outdoor museum area so that Santa Claus can get his little helpers back and focus fully on his Christmas preparations?

Aarne Laitakari (1890-1975) oli Geologisen tutkimuskeskuksen johtaja, professori sekä Lapin kullankaivajain liiton kunniajäsen 1950 lähtien. Helsingistä kotoisin oleva Laitakari väitteli geologian tohtoriksi 1921 ja oli perustamassa Ivalojoki Oy:tä vuonna 1925. Yhtiö ei ollut kuitenkaan järin pitkäikäinen, vaan kaatui jo parin vuoden kuluttua. Vuonna 1930 Laitakari valittiin Geologisen tutkimuslaitoksen (nyk. GTK) johtajaksi ja toimi tehtävässä vuoteen 1960 saakka.
