The world’s only international Gold Museum
Tankavaara is home for the only international museum in the world displaying past and present of gold panning and prospecting. Gold Museum was founded in 1973 by gold prospector’s to research and preserve the history of gold prospecting and gold panning in Finnish Lapland from the 19th century to the present day. Today, Gold Museum is run by the private Gold Museum Foundation.
The main exhibition, The History of Gold in Lapland, introduces you to 150 years of gold prospecting in Lapland, starting with the Ivalojoki gold rush in 1869. The international exhibition Golden World takes you on a journey around the world to discover the gold traditions of more than 20 countries, from ancient Rome to the Klondike.
Gold panning all year round
At Gold Museum, you can try your hand at gold panning in guided workshops. Gold panning includes a museum ticket and a short guided tour in The History of Gold in Lapland exhibition. More information and tickets here.

October-May: Mon-Fri 11-16 (11 a.m.-4 p.m.)
June-September: Mon-Sun 10-17 (10 a.m.-5 p.m.)

Kultamuseon joukkue sijoittui eilen Lapin Kulta-sarjan huuhdontakilpailuissa hienosti viidenneksi. Kaikki viisi joukkuetta suoriutuivat hienosti. Kiitos sarjaan osallistuneille joukkueille Kultamuseon tukemisesta. Museon tiimin asut oli ainakin parhaimmasta päästä. Mekossa vaskaaminen osoittautui kohtuullisen hankalaksi, ainakin jos sellainen on ensimmäistä kertaa päällä...
Kullanhuuhdonnan SM-kisat käynnissä sunnuntaihin asti - poikkea Tankavaaraan todistamaan kilpailun huumaa, ja käy samalla museossa oppimassa muun muassa kisojen historiasta.

Gold Museum's team placed fifth in the Lapland Gold Series panning competitions yesterday. All five teams competed very well. Thanks to the competitors who participated in the series for supporting the Gold Museum. The museum team's outfits were at least top-notch. Panning in a dress proved to be quite difficult, at least if you're wearing one for the first time...
The Finnish Gold Panning Championships are on until Sunday - stop by Tankavaara to witness the excitement of the competition, and visit the museum to learn about the history of the competitions, among other things.

Kultamuseon tuki ry järjestää jälleen torstaina 16.7. ennen varsinaisia kullanhuuhdonnan SM-kisoja hupisarjan. Osallistumismaksu 200 euroa/joukkue lahjoitetaan lyhentämättömänä Kultamuseolle.
Museon kesätyöntekijät haastavat perinteisesti yhteistyökumppaneita kisaamaan sarjassa. Sarja on kuitenkin avoin kaikille kiinnostuneille. Vielä mahtuu mukaan! Kuvassa Kultamuseon joukkue viime vuodelta. (Hassut asut suotavia, muttei pakollisia)

Granuliitti on kovassa paineessa ja lämpötilassa, kuten vuorijonopoimutuksessa, muodostuva kivilaji. Punarakeisen kiven päämineraalit ovat kvartsi, maasälvät ja granaatti. Kultamuseo sijaitsee Lapin granuliittikaaren alueella, joka muodostui 1,9 miljardia vuotta sitten mantereiden törmäyksessä. Saumakohta näkyy edelleen alueen kallioissa granuliitteina. Tankavaaran alueelta tuttua kiveä on talletettu myös mittavaan kivi- ja mineraalikokoelmaamme.
Granulite is a type of rock formed under high pressure and temperature, such as in mountain range folding. The main minerals of the red-grained rock are quartz, feldspar and garnet. The Gold Museum is located in the Lapland granulite arc area, which was formed 1.9 billion years ago in continental collision. Granulites in the area reveal the seam. Specimens of the rock, which can be found from the Tankavaara area, have been collected to our large rock- and mineral collection.
