The world’s only international Gold Museum
Tankavaara is home for the only international museum in the world displaying past and present of gold panning and prospecting. Gold Museum was founded in 1973 by gold prospector’s to preserve and present the history of gold prospecting and gold panning in Finnish Lapland from the 19th century to the present day. Today, Gold Museum is run by the private Gold Museum Foundation.
Our exhibition The History of Gold in Lapland introduces you to 150 years of gold prospecting in Lapland, starting with the Ivalojoki gold rush in 1869. The international exhibition Golden World takes you on a journey around the world to discover the gold traditions of more than 20 countries, from ancient Rome to the Klondike.
Gold panning all year round
At Gold Museum, you can try your hand at gold panning in guided workshops. Gold panning includes a museum ticket and a short guided tour in The History of Gold in Lapland exhibition. More information and tickets here.

October-May: Mon-Fri 11-16 (11 a.m.-4 p.m.)
June-September: Mon-Sun 10-17 (10 a.m.-5 p.m.)

Summer program extended to October
Due to high demand, the Gold Museum is offering its gold panning workshop until October 16th every weekday at 1 pm. Gold Museum is a great indoor activity for the autumn. During the next two weeks 12.- 23.10. Gold Museum will still have a daily gold panning tour starting at 1pm. Book at www.kultamuseo.fi/en/experiences/gold-panning/ or when you arrive at the ticket booth. If you can't make it to the 1pm tour, ask for private tours! Museum open Mon-Fri 11-16.

Object of October: gold scale
Ruskan päättyessä ja lokakuun alkaessa oli ja on viimeistään aika punnita joko kaivukaudella tai sen loppupuolella kertynyt kulta, yleensä hieno kulta. Isommat hiput tavataan punnita miltei heti löytymisen jälkeen. Vaakoja on ollut ja on erinäköisiä ja -kokoisia, osa niistä itse tuunattuja. Tämä tehdasvalmisteinen kultavaaka punnuksen paikkoineen oli käytössä kullankaivaja Ville Keurulaisella.
In October, it was and is time to weigh the gold fount either during the whole season or the gold of the last weeks of the season. Usually, this gold was small nuggets or so-called lifeless nuggets. Bigger nuggets are usually being weighed right after finding them. Scales were various is size and looks, part of them self-made or modified. Gold prospector Ville Keurulainen used this manufactured scale when prospecting in Lemmenjoki goldfields.

Kultamuseossa kummittelee! // Ghosts at the Gold Museum!
Kultamuseo järjestää 30.10. tapahtuman, joka juhlistaa pyhäinpäivää, kekriä ja halloweenia. Erityinen museokierros johdattelee kummitustarinoihin Lapin ja maailman kultakentiltä. Lapsille luvassa kurpitsa- ja kultajahtia Kultamuseon näyttelyiden uumenissa. Pop-up kahvila tarjoilee munkkeja, lämmintä juotavaa ja teemaan sopivia herkkuja klo 14:30 alkaen.
Museoon pääsee 30.10. ilmaiseksi klo 16 jälkeen. Tervetuloa!
Gold Museum hosts an event celebrating All Saints day, halloween and the Finnish Kekri on 30.10. Special tour presents the best ghost stories from Lapland's and world's gold fields. For children, there is an pumpkins and gold-treasure hunt. A pop-up cafe offers doughnuts, hot drinks and seasonal treats from 14:30 onwards.
Free admission to the museum after 16:00. Welcome!

Kultamuseon talvi 2026 / Gold Museum’s winter 2026
Tästä päivästä 1.10. Kultamuseolla taas käytössä talven aukioloajat. Olemme auki läpi talven maanantaista perjantaihin, 11–16.
Yleiset kullanhuuhdontakierrokset jatkuvat arkisin klo 13 aina 16.10. asti, sen jälkeen keskiviikkoisin ja perjantaisin, aloitus klo 13:30. Yksityiset museo- ja huuhdontakierrokset myös muina aikoina varauksella. Ota yhteyttä!
