The world’s only international Gold Museum
Tankavaara is home for the only international museum in the world displaying past and present of gold panning and prospecting. Gold Museum was founded in 1973 by gold prospector’s to research and preserve the history of gold prospecting and gold panning in Finnish Lapland from the 19th century to the present day. Today, Gold Museum is run by the private Gold Museum Foundation.
The main exhibition, The History of Gold in Lapland, introduces you to 150 years of gold prospecting in Lapland, starting with the Ivalojoki gold rush in 1869. The international exhibition Golden World takes you on a journey around the world to discover the gold traditions of more than 20 countries, from ancient Rome to the Klondike.
Gold panning all year round
At Gold Museum, you can try your hand at gold panning in guided workshops. Gold panning includes a museum ticket and a short guided tour in The History of Gold in Lapland exhibition. In winter 2025-2026, gold panning will take place on Wednesdays and Fridays at 2:00 p.m.
Gold Museum is open all year round:
October-May: Mon-Fri 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
June-September: Mon-Sun 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Join Gold Museum’s Elf Trail!
Can you find the elves hiding in the museum and complete the elf bingo? The elf bingo can be completed by children and the young at heart together or separately, and it is available in three languages: Finnish, Northern Sami, and English. The Elf Trail is open until the end of January. Little reward awaits…

Rikhard "Riku" Ilonen (1928-2016) oli pitkän linjan kullankaivaja, jolla oli paikkansa useassa kaivuporukassa. Hän tutustui ensimmäisen kerran kullankaivun saloihin Lemmenjoella, kesällä 1952. Tuona kesänä hän kaivoi mm. Yrjö Hummarkosken, Vihtori Kosken ja Veikko Nevalaisen valtauksilla.
Ilosta ei näkynyt seuraavina kesinä, kunnes 10 vuotta myöhemmin hän palasi Lemmenjoelle ja perusti kaivospiirin Martti Koiviston kanssa. Sittemmin hänet tavattiin myös mm. Niilo Raumalan, Ville Keurulaisen, Risto Mäläskän ja Anita Patalan kaivuseurana.
Vaikka Ilonen oli monessa mukana, ei hänestä ole jäänyt moniakaan kirjan kansiin painettuja tarinoita. Onko sinulla muistoja Riku Ilosesta?

Kullankaivaja Topi Heinon kämppä ja sen tunturimaisemaa vuonna 1984. Janakkalasta kotoisin ollut Heino kaivoi kultaa Lemmenjoen Jäkälä-äytsillä 1970-luvun alusta alkaen.
Kuvanottopaikaksi on mainittu Lampikuru. Osaisiko joku sivuston seuraajista vinkata tarkemmin, missä kohdin Lampikurun kämppä on sijainnut? Paikkaa ei näytä löytyvän kartasta tuolla nimellä.
