Gold Museum’s new weekly program, Gold Prospector’s Starter Pack, introduces you to Lapland’s gold prospecting history and gold’s journey from stars to gold pan. On the tour, our guide will introduce you to the gold rush on the Ivalojoki River, the lives of gold prospectors, and lifechanging gold discoveries. In the Mineral exhibition, you will learn about the cosmic origins of gold, and at the end, you will get to pan for gold yourself at Gold Museum’s indoor pool. A Surprise in the middle of Wilderness
Tankavaara is home for the only international museum in the world displaying past and present of gold panning and prospecting. The first main exhibition presents the history of gold prospecting in Lapland. The second main exhibition, Golden World – International Gold History, presents over twenty countries all over the world. Welcome!
In Tankavaara area you can also find our neighbours: Tankavaara Gold Village with its services and the UKK National Park nature trails.

Joulun aikaan niin pienet kuin isommat tontut voivat museokäynnin yhteydessä täyttää Kultamuseon tonttubingon etsiessään museolle piiloutuneita joulupukin apulaisia. A group of elves has arrived to the Gold Museum 🤶🎅
Come and meet these and other happy elf friends on the Gold Museum's elf trail, which opens on December 1st!
During the Christmas season, elves of all sizes can fill out the Gold Museum's elf bingo while visiting the museum, searching for Santa's little helpers hidden in the museum. Will you find all the elves hiding in the museum and outdoor museum area so that Santa Claus can get his little helpers back and focus fully on his Christmas preparations?

Aarne Laitakari (1890-1975) oli Geologisen tutkimuskeskuksen johtaja, professori sekä Lapin kullankaivajain liiton kunniajäsen 1950 lähtien. Helsingistä kotoisin oleva Laitakari väitteli geologian tohtoriksi 1921 ja oli perustamassa Ivalojoki Oy:tä vuonna 1925. Yhtiö ei ollut kuitenkaan järin pitkäikäinen, vaan kaatui jo parin vuoden kuluttua. Vuonna 1930 Laitakari valittiin Geologisen tutkimuslaitoksen (nyk. GTK) johtajaksi ja toimi tehtävässä vuoteen 1960 saakka.

Ivalojoen Kultalan tunnelmia marraskuisessa pakkassäässä ❄
Ivalojoella koettiin Suomen ensimmäinen kultaryntäys 1868 alkaen, kun "Nulkkamukasta" löydettiin 0,2 grammaa kultaa. Ivalojoen Kultala kehittyi kullankaivajien ja viranomaisten keskuspaikaksi, ja siellä oli mm. kapakka, leipomo ja sauna. Nykyään Kultalaan johtaa Metsähallituksen ylläpitämä 12 km pitkä polku ja Kultalassa on autio- ja varaustupa. Kohde sopii vain sulanmaanajan vierailuun.

Ivalojoki River and Kultala in freezing November weather ❄
Finland's first gold rush began on the Ivalojoki River in 1868, when 0.2 grams of gold was found in "Nulkkamukka." Kultala on the Ivalojoki River developed into a heasquaters for gold prospectors and authorities, and it had a tavern, a bakery, and a sauna, among other things. Today, a 12-kilometer trail maintained by Metsähallitus leads to Kultala historical site, which has a wilderness hut and a reservation hut. The site is only suitable for visits during the snow-free season.

Matti Finni (myös Finne, Finn. 1895-1951) oli ensimmäisiä kullankaivajia Lemmenjoen ja etenkin Miessin kultapuroilla. Finni rakensi itselleen turvemajan 1947, mutta ei ehtinyt nauttia erämaan elämästä kuin pari kesää, kunnes joutui taipumaan väistämättömän edessä.
