The world’s only international Gold Museum
Tankavaara is home for the only international museum in the world displaying past and present of gold panning and prospecting. Gold Museum was founded in 1973 by gold prospector’s to research and preserve the history of gold prospecting and gold panning in Finnish Lapland from the 19th century to the present day. Today, Gold Museum is run by the private Gold Museum Foundation.
The main exhibition, The History of Gold in Lapland, introduces you to 150 years of gold prospecting in Lapland, starting with the Ivalojoki gold rush in 1869. The international exhibition Golden World takes you on a journey around the world to discover the gold traditions of more than 20 countries, from ancient Rome to the Klondike.
Gold panning all year round
At Gold Museum, you can try your hand at gold panning in guided workshops. Gold panning includes a museum ticket and a short guided tour in The History of Gold in Lapland exhibition. In winter 2025-2026, gold panning will take place on Wednesdays and Fridays at 2:00 p.m.
Gold Museum is open all year round:
October-May: Mon-Fri 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
June-September: Mon-Sun 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Join Gold Museum’s Elf Trail!
Can you find the elves hiding in the museum and complete the elf bingo? The elf bingo can be completed by children and the young at heart together or separately, and it is available in three languages: Finnish, Northern Sami, and English. 🏛 The permanent exhibitions showcase the gold rushes of Finnish Lapland, gold discoveries, and legendary figures from the goldfields, as well as the history of gold around the world.
👥️The temporary exhibition “The Faces of Gold Mining in Lapland” introduces modern-day gold miners and their multifaceted life stories. On display until May 8, 2026.
🌟 The Gold Prospector’s Starter Pack introduces you to the history of gold panning and the story of gold, from the stars to the pan. You can try your hand at gold panning, and you get to keep the gold and gemstones you find! Wednesdays and Fridays at 2:00 p.m., last session on April 1.

Sunnuntai-iltana Lapin yllä havaitun tulipallon aiheuttama välähdys tallentui myös Kultamuseon kameroihin.
URSA:n Tähdet ja avaruus -sivustolla kerrotaan tulipallon lentoradasta ja nopeudesta näin:
"Jaakko Visuri tulipallotyöryhmästä on laatinut kappaleen lennosta ratamallinnuksen kamerahavaintojen perusteella. Tulipallon näkyvä lento alkoi Norjan Karigasniemen länsipuolelta ja se lensi lähes suoraan etelään.
Ilmiön aiheuttanut kappale tuli ilmakehään melko suurella nopeudella, arviolta 35 kilometriä sekunnissa noin 30 asteen kulmassa. “Tästä johtuen kappale paloi loppuun jo melko korkealla ilmakehässä eikä siitä selvinnyt meteoriitteja maanpinnalle”, Visuri sanoo.
Ilmakehään törmännyt avaruuskivi tuli harvinaisen kaukaa. Ennen osumistaan maapallon ilmakehään, kappale oli ellipsiradalla, jonka lähin piste oli hieman Maan radan sisäpuolella ja kaukaisin piste Uranuksen ja Neptunuksen ratojen välissä."

Miessin pankkiirinakin tunnettu Jalmari Hepo-oja (1913–1983) aloitti kullankaivun jo 1940-luvun lopulla, jatkaen 80-luvulle saakka. Hän oli ensimmäinen ympärivuotisesti Miessijoella asunut kullankaivaja, joka tunnettiin myös kekseliäistä rakennuksistaan. Hepo-ojalla oli valtauksellaan ainakin vesivoimalla toimiva sähkölaitos ja samoin vesivoimalla toiminut koneellinen huuhdontalaitos.
Ensimmäisessä kuvassa Jalmari ja Linnea Hepo-oja sekä heidän lapsensa 1950-luvulla. Toisessa kuvassa Jalmari Hepo-ojan sähkölaitos talvellakin sulana pysyvän virran varrella.
